hdd turns 50

Interesting article today in the WSJ on hard disk drives which are 50 years old this year. Two interesting pieces of information in the article:
  • RAMAC, invented by IBM, was the first disk drive. It was 24 inches in diameter, weighed over 1 ton and had 5 MB of storage (enough for 5 minutes of music)
  • The drive could have been made to store more information but the marketing department couldn't figure out how to sell something with so much storage
